| Newsletter - November 2009 |
| We are coming to the end of 2009 and once again we will be enjoying
Christmas with all our families and friends. The year 2009 has been both
exciting and very busy for us. This has been the best year for Tartan
Farms since we bought the property some 9 years ago.
Our achievements have been establishing three new Lowline Breeders from our herd, exporting six females to Thailand with the help of CRV Ambreed. The demand for Lowline Infused weaner calves has way exceeded our supply which we rear each year. As well as having to turn down the prospects for Lowline Bulls. A lot of the demand has been the result of our fellow Australian Lowline Breeders winning the major led steer competitions. Next winter we will double the number of calves we rear as we need to build up our numbers to supply the demand for our meat. Forgetting a stint of three days in hospital with broken ribs after being trampled on by a heifer while tagging its first calf. Our Lowline Infused Meat sales at the Pokeno Farmers Market on each Sunday have been most encouraging and we are well on the way to making our small farm holding viable for the future. We have now been able to offer to our Lifestyle clientele who purchase our weaner calves a market once they reach an age 0f 15 to 18 months. Several paddocks are now shut up for hay and we have plenty of feed especially as we have reduced our purebred herd numbers. What we would like to do is expand our Farmers Market Meat business using the Tartan Farms label and we are making the first steps over Christmas and the New Year in a modest way. You will find Tartan Farms products at more market days in the future. On the farm over the summer it will be back to gorse spraying, pulling ragwort and grubbing thistles. We are getting these imported problems slowly under control. However we will have to do some pine tree thinning this summer as they are growing so tall especially in front of the house and impeding our view We are at present calving the Purebred Herd, hoping for 100% success this year. This is happening much later this year as our AI success rate was not good and we had to resort to Wallace and later Craig to do the job.
