Crossbred Calf Programme

Designed for Lifestyle Farmers in the Franklin, Waikato and Auckland Districts

Each winter from August to October Tartan Farms rear up to one hundred 4 day old Lowline/Jersey Crossbred Calves.

These are sold to small block holders and used mainly to keep the grass down and fill the freezer. They also have other advantages as being small, easy to handle and light on the land.

The meat from this F1 (First Cross) is tender and does not have the yellow fat associated with Jersey and the meat yield is generally a lot better than say the White Face as our F1s are lighter boned.

When the calves first arrive they are a beautiful chocolate brown colour, however as they become older they turn black. The calves from this first cross are easily identified as they have a dark ring around the eye.

We sell most of the calves once they are weaned at six to eight weeks, but we do sell some 4 day old calves to people who like to rear them on milk themselves to weaning.

To view our prices for these crossbred calves please click "For Sale" on our menu at the top of the page.

We already have several customers who buy our weaner calves each October and the following year we buy them back as yearlings for finishing, then the customers take a further consignment of calves. This has been working well for both parties as they are returning approximately 50% on their investment and we have a supply of animals for finishing. However, you must be aware that prices do change from year to year and season to season. October is the time of the year that prices generally peak due to the supply of grass.

We are looking to expand this program in the coming year as we are requiring more and more yearling crossbred calves.

If you are interested in this sort of proposal, please contact us as soon as possible, preferably before the 1st August 2009.
